Happy Smiley

We all want to be happy, that’s a given. Seemingly, some people appear to find it easier than others. By virtue of our personalities some people are just more upbeat and positive than others. Even that being the case, we can all find more happy in our lives.

I believe the simplest way to do that is by noticing all the little things that make you happy, bring you joy, or a little smile to your face or heart every day. Somehow we want to think it is just the big things that are going to bring us happiness and we are in a constant chase for it. It’s just around the corner, with a new job, new relationship, a new car, new house – blah, blah, blah… this list goes on and on of what we think will make us happy. When my husband and I were raising our daughter and she was in her late teens and early twenties she seemed to be always chasing after that thing that would make her happy, because then life would for sure be better. We would then recite to her one of my favorite quotes of all time – “Wherever you go there you are” – John Kabot-Zinn. (To dive further into this subject check out his book.) If you can’t find a way to be happy in the here and now, it’s highly likely you won’t be happy when that thing is attained or achieved. That’s why we need to focus on the little things daily. So, I have this exercise I created that I am going to share with you and I highly encourage you to do the same. You may even want to try doing a little picture journal so that you can refer back to it when you need a little pick me up.

I am going to walk you through a day showing you what makes me happy and why. Here we go…

IMG_3324#1. I will start by telling you I am not a morning person. That happened back in my early 40’s when my sleep went to s***. On weekdays I get up early to work, but come the weekend I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to sleep in. My husband gets up early, I stay in bed. Once I am a little bit awake my littlest fur child gets up in bed with me to cuddle. This starts my day on a very happy note. Now, I know those of you with small children are cursing at me right now because this is not doable for you. I’ve been there, done that and I get it. Your day will come. The first thing on your list most likely will be something else.

#2. Oh this breakfast makes my mouth and my tummy happy. Being a fitness person, IIMG_2250 try not to eat a lot of sugar. A couple of times a week I make an exception and have one of my favorite weekday breakfasts. Chocolate, Peanut Butter & Banana Oatmeal. It is so super delicious and satisfying and it gets me through a very busy, physical morning until I eat at lunchtime. If you are interested my recipe it is posted at the bottom of this blog. This is one of my little splurges during the week.

IMG_6569#3. I love Yoga! I love doing yoga, sharing yoga, teaching Yoga. Most of my mornings start be teaching a Yoga class in my beautiful home studio that we built when moving to Colorado Springs. Each morning I look forward to experiencing my wonderful clients as they walk through the door. No matter where they are at and what is going on in their lives, we all get to escape for an hour and do something positive for our bodies, minds and spirits! (You can see my Yoga class schedule here. Online classes also offered and can be taken from anywhere!)

IMG_2286 (1)#4. Almost 2 years ago we moved from Orange County, CA to Colorado Springs. There
were many reasons behind the move, and it was a huge change after living in “The OC” for 32 years. But we have have fallen in love with Colorado. We live in a mountainy area where deer roam freely. We have them in our yard daily. Some people thinks it’s a nuisance because they eat their plants, but I’ve not grown tired of it and I love it. Especially this time of year when the baby deer appear. Reason 4 to be happy.

IMG_6372#5. At sometime during each day I take both the dogs for a walk out on the hiking trails that are just behind our house. The pure joy I see in them both getting ready and enjoying the walk makes me very happy. Who doesn’t love a little wind in their face?

#6. Girlfriends have always been a very important part of my life. In California I had an amazing network of gals that I miss very much. When I moved to Colorado I made a concerted effort to make new friends. In order to do that I start a Women’s Meetup group. We meet 2-3 times per month and do all kinds of fun activities around our city. These ladies make me happy! (If you are local and would like to join our group we are SW Colorado Springs Women’s Group.)

IMG_6949#7. OK – Yes, food again! I love food and I love wine. And because I love tasty food, I cook, usually five to six nights per week. Feeding my body and my family healthy food makes me feel great and therefore, happy. I love finding new dishes to make that are nutritious and flavorful. On top of that wrapping up my day with a glass of wine is just what I need to relax. Adding a pic in of a dish I made a few nights ago. Cauliflower Crust Hawaiian Pizza.

IMG_1228#8. Last but not least, my husband makes me happy. We have been married for 33 years. As every marriage does, it has had its ups and downs, but we have weathered the storms together. My husband’s dad died at 52 of a stroke, his brother at 46 of cancer and his mom after suffering 10 years with heart disease died at the age of 72. My husband is now 56. This means each and every day that I get to spend with him his a huge blessing. I feel so happy getting to share life and to cuddle up next to him every day!

So that’s my little day trip down happiness lane. Each day can bring something new for you to tuck away in your happiness journal. Be aware and on the lookout, it’s there! I would love for you to comment back with some of your little happy tidbits. Wishing you all many happy moments as you journey forward!
